Toledo off the hook… for now

President Alejandro Toledo was finally absolved from blame for his alleged involvement in a signature-forging ring set up to register the now-ruling Perú Posible (PP) for the 2000 elections. Congress voted (57-46) on 19 May not to submit the final report of the legislative committee investigating the case to the public prosecutor on the grounds that only three of the five legislators on the committee voted on it, one of whom, Edgar Villanueva, the president of the committee and a PP dissident, appeared to have an axe to grind.
