Politicians caught in crossfire

At the heart of Colombia's seemingly interminable violence lies the inability of its politicians to overcome the powerful forces behind the brutality, be they guerrillas, paramilitaries, or drug traffickers. Often, this stems from politicians being confronted by a stark choice: either cooperate with the enemy or risk dying at his hands. Three events in the last month epitomised this dilemma.
