Súmate visits the White House

Opponents to President Chávez appeared delighted at the end of May with the visit of one of their number, Maria Corina Machado, to the White House. Machado, a founder of Súmate, a theoretically independent citizens rights organisation, spent 15 minutes talking with President Bush on the threat to democracy in Venezuela. It is hard to see, however, how the visit might have confounded critics who claim that Súmate is effectively an extension of the State Department.
