Who will judge the parapoliticians?

As if the parapolitical scandal had not dealt a heavy enough blow to Colombia, those implicated are trying to undermine its institutions further. Politicians with links to the paramilitaries are resigning as politicians in the hope that they can indefinitely avoid prosecution.
As the law stands, congressmen charged with breaking the law face prosecution by the supreme court. In keeping with this responsibility the supreme court has played a crucial role in the parapolitical scandal: it has created a special unit to investigate the crimes and put six congressmen behind bars for their links to the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). It has also summoned all 40 or so politicians who signed a pact with the paramilitary leaders in 2001.
