The 17.6% increase in the minimum wage, announced by the labour ministry on 27 December, takes the minimum wage up to US$200 a month. In cash terms the increase is worth around US$30 a month. Employers had offered 2.76%. Small businesses say that the proposal is dangerous nonsense. The Cámara de Comercio in Pichincha said that higher unemployment would be an inevitable consequence.
