Prospects for the imminent restoration of diplomatic relations between
Colombia and Ecuador have been fluctuating wildly this month between acrimonious
exchanges, misunderstandings and new revelations. President Rafael Correa has
made diplomatic gestures on the Ecuadorean side, adopting a much stronger stance
against the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) and pushing
forward with a military drive to clear Ecuador's northern border area of Farc
operations. Hopes of a prompt and happy reconciliation between the neighbouring
countries appear to have been scuppered, however, by Colombia's intransigence
and by recent revelations concerning its air raid on a Farc camp in Ecuador on 1
