The Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV), the single party
unifying the different Bolivarian factions (and presided over by President Hugo
Chávez ) will hold a national assembly of its 1,600 party delegates on 9 May.
The meeting was convened in order to agree a method for the selection of
candidates for the upcoming state and local elections on 23 November. PSUV unity
is increasingly strained by internal rows about the direction of Chávez 's
Bolivarian revolution and by tensions over candidacies for the local polls.
Given the importance of the polls, Chávez will not be leaving much to chance;
ultimately he will dictate the final choice of candidates.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1204 words.
