Garcí­a courts Brazil

President Alan Garcí­a is controversially stepping up efforts to secure closer trade relations with Brazil. Garcí­a proposed “a sort of bilateral free trade agreement (FTA)" with Brazil during a visit to the country in late September during which he met his Brazilian peer Lula da Silva, as well as representatives of Fiesp, the powerful federation of industrialists of São Paulo. Garcí­a proposed that a new trade accord between Peru and Brazil be negotiated outside of Mercosur and the Andean Community (CAN).
