Uribe's re-election chances knocked

Colombia's usually unflappable President Alvaro Uribe has had another difficult month. He was forced to call a state of social emergency on 17 November to deal with a snowballing crisis caused by the collapse of numerous fraudulent pyramid schemes, which are estimated to have cost hundreds of thousands of Colombians as much as US$450m.  In congress, meanwhile, a bill to hold a referendum that, if passed, would allow Uribe to run for a third consecutive term in 2010, has stalled.
