Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez hosted an emergency meeting of Alba, his
regional integration initiative, on 26 November. The purpose of the meeting was
to come up with an alternative response to the global financial crisis. Chávez
made it clear what he thought of the prevailing message from November's G-20
summit in Washington and the Asia-Pacific Economic cooperation (Apec) summit in
Lima shortly before the Alba get together. “The US says the (financial) crisis
must be resolved with more market freedom," he said. “This is madness: it is
like taking someone who has bronchitis and putting them in the freezer."
