PERU: Peru's justice system to get a makeover

The groundbreaking inauguration of César San Martí­n on 3 January as head of the supreme court could herald a transformation of the justice system. His thumping election victory on 2 December 2010 ruffled more than a few feathers in the Fujimorista electoral camp - he is most famous for presiding over the trial of, and sentencing, former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000). San Martí­n's ability to reform a judiciary imbued with corruption, suffering from inefficiency and divorced from the population it is meant to serve will depend greatly on his rapport with the executive branch.
