Power crisis easing off. While things have not yet returned to normal, the acute power shortage that had been afflicting the country for the past months has eased off considerably. By 3 September generation was back up to 1,543MW, not too much lower than the demand of about 1,600MW. This 'miraculous' turnaround came shortly after the government got US$50m of credit from local banks to start repaying debts claimed by the power utilities.
As the electricity supply increased, though, that of liquefied gas dried up - in the wake of the government's announcement that it would be replacing the blanket subsidy so far enjoyed by one more-narrowly targeted on low-income groups.
