DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | US pressure to repeal tax. The US government has threatened to suspend its free-trade agreement with the Dominican Republic if the government does not repeal the 25% duty on imports of maize-based sweeteners which has been included in the fiscal-reform package.

The government of President Leonel Fernández has urged the senate to go ahead and approve the reform package as it is, so as not to delay the collection of new revenues. It added, though, that it would later submit a bill eliminating the duty. Opposition legislators are using the US threat as an excuse to delay approval of the package.
