Pinochet's secret police, the Dina, never tortured anyone or violated anyone's human rights. There were no 'disappeared' in Chile. All evidence to the contrary is a pack of lies, concocted by the terrorists of yesterday and endorsed by the Marxist politicians of today. This, in a nutshell, is the version of recent history to which former Dina chief Manuel Contreras still adheres. In an interview published by El Mercurio in its Saturday magazine, Contreras says the judicial problems he and his men have been facing is the result of a betrayal by former dictator Augusto Pinochet. 'He left us absolutely on our own,' says Contreras. 'He missed the opportunity to be a leader, to honour his vow not to let anyone touch a single one of his men.'
