BRAZIL: Defence minister Viegas leaves after unclear episode

Defence minister José Viegas handed in his resignation last week, ostensibly as a result of a mid-October scandal in which the army issued a communiqué defending the 1964 coup and justifying the methods it used to repress its opponents. The origins of the scandal itself were unclear, and Viegas's departure may not have been what it seems.
