EMPLOYMENT |
Getting real about unemployment. Come January, unemployment in Mexico will shoot up - on paper. This will happen because the government is finally ditching its method for calculating unemployment (counting only those above 12 who did not work for a single hour in the week of the survey). It is adopting a new system put together with the advice of the OECD that will bring it into line with more widely spread international standards and thus make it easier to compare with other countries.
The latest official unemployment figure, calculated by the old method, was 4.01%. It is not yet clear where the new methodology will take it, but it is expected to be at least more than twice that level.
