Reminders

The last time Chiapas saw open armed conflict was when the Zapatistas seized several towns on 1 January 1994. The fighting lasted 12 days and claimed 145 lives before a ceasefire was agreed. 

The last time 'Subcomandante Marcos' was seen in public was in March 2001, when he led a highly publicised 3,000-kilometre march which came to be known as the Zapatour, from Chiapas to Mexico city.
