Determined to keep on striking while the opposition is still in disarray, President Lucio Gutiérrez has pushed through congress a controversial manoeuvre whereby all 31 members of the supreme court have been removed from office and replaced post haste by a new set of appointees. This has been denounced by opposition parties, business leaders and the Catholic Church as unconstitutional, but Gutiérrez claims it has merely released the court from the grip held over it by the conservative Partido Social Cristiano
