BRAZIL: Heckling, defections and rebellion sour Lula's week

President Lula da Silva may have been lionised at Davos, but back home he was jeered and heckled as he addressed the rival gathering he had co-founded, the World Social Forum. This was only one of the contretemps that made it a bad week for him: he also saw 100 members of his party defect en masse, while some rebels in congress floated a maverick candidacy in the leadership elections, in conjunction with the anti-government faction of Lula's chief ally, the PMDB.
