ARGENTINA |
New electricity crisis warning. Argentina could face a new electricity crisis this year and next, according to the Fundación para el Desarrollo Eléctrico (Fundelec). Its problems arise from a dearth of investment over the past four years, combined with a growth of demand that had been averaging 7% annually over the past two years. The country currently has a nominal generating capacity of 22,979MW with which to cover demand peaks of 15,000MW - a misleading pair of figures since 25%-30% of generating plants are usually out of service due to maintenance or repair work.
