BARBADOS: 'Republic status by the end of 2005'

Barbados could become a republic by the end of the year, according to Prime Minister Owen Arthur. A draft bill amending the constitution to this effect is due to be submitted in March by the attorney-general, Mia Mottley. The change was recommended by the constitutional commission headed by former attorney-general and foreign minister Henry Forde.
