Ecuador is left without a supreme court and with a president a majority wants out

A messy round of tinkering with national institutions that resulted from the pressure of rapidly spreading mass protests has left Ecuador without a supreme court and President Lucio Gutiérrez bereft of the majority he had negotiated into being late last year in order to avoid impeachment. To hear Gutiérrez and his officials, though, the government has won a famous victory.
