MEXICO: Supreme court belatedly endorses 'desafuero'

Had President Vicente Fox decided to brave public dissent and proceed with the court case against Mexico City mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he would have had the supreme court on his side, at least to some extent. Twenty-three days after Fox backed down [WR-05-17] the supreme court has ruled that the federal chamber of deputies was right to withdraw López Obrador's immunity from prosecution and to remove him from office.
