PALM OIL: Ramón Pérez, the president of the Federación Nacional de Palma Africana de Honduras, said that the industry was in good shape, despite getting off to a slow start to the year. Exports in the first quarter were down on the same period of 2003. The country produces around 200,000t of palm oil each year and exports almost half of this output to Mexico and Central America. The biggest single area of production is along the Valle de Sula, in the north of the country, where production is likely to hit 45,000t, worth US$22m. There are 600 palm oil growers in the country. Palm oil prices are decent: raw oil fetches around US$550 per t and processed oil US$700 per t.
