BRAZIL: Interest rates up, but economy continues to hum

The central bank's monetary policy committee (Copom) raised the basic interest rate (Selic) by 0.25% to 16.25% at its meeting on 15 September. The decision was unanimous. A week later the central bank also nudged up its forecast for inflation for 2004.
