CHILE: Exports up but unemployment still a problem

Exactly what is going in Chilean economy is hard to make out. The penultimate week of September was a case in point. On 22 September, the motor industry published some impressive figures showing that new car sales were up by 25% in the first eight months of the year. A day later, the Cámaras Nacionales de Comercio published a set of dismal retail sales figures for August, showing the slowest growth in sales for 14 months.
