PANAMA: Clearing up the mess

The new government of President Martí­n Torrijos reckons that it needs to take some urgent action to turn the economy around. The fiscal deficit is between US$700m and US$720m according to the economy minister, Ricaurte Vázquez. This is equivalent to 5.5% of GDP: far more than the US$277m deficit (2.7% of GDP) calculated by the previous administration.
