PANAMA: Clearing up the mess
The new government of President Martín Torrijos reckons that it needs to take some urgent action to turn the economy around. The fiscal deficit is between US$700m and US$720m according to the economy minister, Ricaurte Vázquez. This is equivalent to 5.5% of GDP: far more than the US$277m deficit (2.7% of GDP) calculated by the previous administration.
