GUATEMALA: Protests over Cafta

Peasants have launched protests against the implementation of the free trade agreement with the US, fearing that their business will be swept away on a wave of cheap US imports of staples foods and grains. Other sectors, notably cash-crop exporters and perhaps the textile industry, should benefit from Cafta. The vice-president, Eduardo Stein, held meetings with representatives of the protesters on 16 March.
