CAFTA: Far from a done deal

The controversial free trade deal between the US and Central America and the Dominican Republic is far from a done deal, even though it jumped its first two hurdles: approval in two separate committees in the US congress by mid June. However, there is still considerable opposition to the deal in both houses of the US congress. In Central America, only the congresses in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have approved Cafta. There are strong lobbies against it in Costa Rica and Nicaragua's political crisis has kicked ratification into the legislative long grass.
