DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Worries about the oil price

President Leonel Fernández said on 24 August, before oil prices surged through US$70 a barrel, that if oil prices continued to rise the country's governability would be called into question. Even though the country is eligible for cheap oil from Venezuela, under the Petrocaribe initiative, the government is still looking at ways of cutting consumption. The country's oil bill this year is likely to be US$2.5bn
