Increasing research

The region's central banks and multilaterals are paying increasing attention to the economic impact of remittances. First the Sistema Económico Latinoamericano (Sela) warned on 11 September that the increasing importance of remittances was tempting governments to try to exploit them either economically or politically. The Interamerican Development Bank announced on 19 September that it was linking up with the Inter American Dialogue (IAD) and the Annie E Casey Foundation to study how to harness the flow of remittances to boost growth. Similarly, the central bank of El Salvador published an analysis which argued that remittances took people out of the economy and eased the pressure on government's to create jobs and improve economic policymaking.
