Colombian law grants demobilised paramilitaries short confinement and shield against extradition

Save a few formalities, Colombia's paramilitary leaders are now ensured fairly light sentences - if convicted - for crimes committed while up in arms, deemed 'political' offences, and are virtually guaranteed that they will not be extradited to the US on drug-trafficking charges. The government of President Alvaro Uribe now faces the uphill task of persuading those who are funding his anti-drugs and counter-insurgency efforts that this is not, as critics claim, as an 'impunity charter'.
