PERU: Better than expected

The IMF reckons that the economy's growth rate in 2007 is likely to be faster than the 5.5% forecast by the government. Gilbert Terrier, a senior IMF official, said that the data for the final quarter of 2006 suggested that the economy was doing better than the Peruvian government had thought. According to preliminary data, which are subject to revision, the economy grew by 7.5% in 2006. This is the highest rate since 1995, and one percentage point above the IMF's forecast.
