Down but not out

The widespread fear that the Mexican economy now peaks in election years and then flounders for the first part of the new administration may be wrong. President Vicente Fox's first year of office in 2001 was blighted by the slowdown in the US which obliterated growth in Mexico. President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa looks luckier: the US economy is slowing but the combination of low interest rates a strong-looking domestic economy appear to be blunting the effect of the US slowdown.
