URUGUAY: Inflation worries

In the first half of 2007 inflation was 5.5%. This means that the government will miss its target for 2007 of a rate of inflation not exceeding 6.5%. In the 12 months to June the official consumer price index rose by 8.5%. The local consensus among economists is that the authorities will tighten monetary policy significantly in the second half of the year. This should lead to an appreciation in the peso against the dollar.
