CUBA: Energy problems

The vice president, Carlos Lage, called on individuals and the state to be more thoughtful in their use of electricity and not to waste it. Lage claimed that his call was not designed to reduce the chances of blackouts but to cut down on the need for fresh investment in the energy industry. The basic industries minister, Yadira Garcí­a, has ordered managers in the energy industry to work harder to reduce waste and corruption. She said that some petrol stations were selling fuel on the blackmarket and there appeared to be no reduction in the number of private vehicles travelling on the roads.
