BRAZIL : Booming food prices speed up deforestation

The Brazilian government reported on 15 June that 40% of the country's soya and beef are produced in the huge area known as the Amazonia Legal. This area, covering nine states of the Amazon basin, is 83% true Amazonian forest and 17% pasture and arable land. The Amazonia Legal has been earmarked by the government for agricultural developments that are supposed to allow 80% of the forest to be preserved.
