Mexico raises interest rates again

On 15 August the Banco de México raised interest rates by 0.25 of a percentage point to 8.25%. This was the third consecutive monthly interest rate increase. The policy underlines the central bank's fierce independence from the government: at the beginning of June President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa appealed to the bank not raise rates for fear of quashing domestic economic activity.
