BOLIVIA: The case for the Bolivian capital market

The Bolsa Boliviana de Valores (BBV)) has been in existence for 20 years. In that time 85 companies have used it to raise capital, mostly from banks, pension funds and insurance companies, which buy short term (45 day) bills and longer term bonds. Figures from the Federación Iberoamericana de Bolsas (FIAB) show, somewhat surprisingly, that BBV is the seventh most active capital market in the region. In the first eight months of 2009 it turned over US$1.84bn, which was more than Quito and Guayaquil, Panama, El Salvador and Montevideo.
