NICARAGUA: Former president Aleman imprisoned

Former president Arnoldo Alemán has received the dubious accolade of being the first Nicaraguan former head of state to be imprisoned on corruption charges. Judge Juana Mendez ordered that Alemán, who is awaiting trial for alleged money laundering to the tune of US$100m, be sent to El Chipote police prison in Managua. Alemán is also accused of a further US$1.3m fraud of state television channel Canal 6 and electoral fraud.
