Ortega proposes joint oil venture with Venezuela. Sandinista leader (and current presidential candidate) Daniel Ortega last week proposed the creation of a joint Nicaraguan-Venezuelan firm to import and distribute oil on preferential terms, similar to those Venezuela already applies to Cuba and Uruguay. He said he had discussed the matter with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez during a recent visit to Caracas and that Chávez had expressed his willingness to enter such a deal, as well as to invest in storage and distribution infrastructure in Nicaragua. Ortega said he was willing to discuss the initiative with President Enrique Bolaños and that he could not envisage any reasons for the government to obstruct it.
