VENEZUELA: Televangelist's remarks obscure events at home

It was almost inevitable that last week's news on Venezuela should have been dominated by US televangelist Pat Robertson's suggestion that President Hugo Chávez be assassinated. It provided the opportunity for much rhetorical indignation by Venezuelan officialdom and distracted attention from two uncomfortable developments in Venezuela itself: a violent attack on an opposition demonstration and the passage of legislation assigning internal security functions to the expanded military reserve.
