ECUADOR: Protests end in shaky deal; Palacio's rating plunges

At the time of writing there is a chance that the protest actions in the Amazonian provinces of Orellana and Sucumbí­os might resume. The organisers threatened to do so if the private oil companies failed to ratify an agreement by 30 August reached five days earlier which committed them to making investments in local infrastructure and hiring most of their personnel in the area. The crisis has already cost President Alfredo Palacio dearly in terms of credibility and popularity.
