PANAMA: Banana crop damaged by sigatoka outbreak

Panama's fragile banana industry has been dealt a sharp blow by an outbreak of black sigatoka that has attacked the banana crop of the Puerto Armuelles operation, causing substantial losses. José Morris Quintero, president of the Puerto Armuelles cooperative Coosemupar, put the losses at about US$500,000, necessitating the dismissal of more than 200 workers.
