The build-up to the crucial ministerial meeting of the Free Trade Area of the
Americas begins today. The ministers will meet on Thursday and Friday (20/21
November), when they will attempt to move the negotiations into their final
phase. The problem they face is that tricky issues such as agricultural
subsidies, intellectual property rights, and investments are unresolved. Despite
the differences all sides say that they want to avoid a repeat of the failure of
the World Trade Organisation meeting in Cancún in September.
