DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Heavyhanded ex-police chief enters political arena

Is there a general in the future of the Dominican Republic? At least one retired general, former police chief Pedro de Jesús Candelier, announced last week that many citizens have been saying that he is 'the man needed to straighten out the country'. He said he had not yet decided if he would be running for the presidency in 2008 but, just in case, he spent 23 minutes on television outlining a 'plan for the nation' he had put together.
