Threat to banana industry seen in EU proposal. The Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery (CRNM) has said that the region's banana industry would be 'severely challenged' by the revised banana tariff proposal announced last week by the European Commission (EC). Under the 'tariff only' regime, which comes into effect in January, this sets the tariff on third-country or most-favoured nation imports at 187 euros per tonne, down from the 230 euros proposed earlier. The government of Dominica, which has already seen its exports of bananas to the EC fall by 75%, says the new rate 'seriously threatens the survival of the industry'.
