NICARAGUA: First 'desafueros' trigger new mediating spurt
As we had anticipated the opposition parties controlling congress have opted to leave President Enrique Bolaños alone while targeting his cabinet. Last week the legislative assembly voted to lift the immunity from prosecution enjoyed by a minister and a deputy minister - two of seven officials charged, like Bolaños, with failing to declare campaign contributions. The manoeuvre has triggered a new mediating spurt on the part of the OAS.
