PANAMA: Torrijos wins

The polls were spot on. Martí­n Torrijos will be the next President of Panama after taking 47% of the vote in the 2 May elections. Torrijos, of the opposition coalition Patria Nueva, inflicted a crushing victory on the ruling Partido Arnulfista candidate, José Miguel Alemán, who mustered a mere 16.4% of the vote. The dominant partner in the coalition, the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), was the big winner in the legislative elections and the PRD mayor of Panama City, Juan Carlos Navarro was re-elected with more than 60% of the vote.
