The mayor of Mexico City, Andrés Manuel López Obrador launched a furious attack on the federal government on 10 June. He accused the government of using the legal system to persecute him. López Obrador was formally responding to a judicial committee of the lower chamber of congress which is considering whether to strip him of his immunity from prosecution. The mayor heads the opinion polls for the 2006 presidential election.
